Post codes, often recognized as ZIP codes or postal codes, stand as an integral part of modern-day living, offering a structured system that simplifies geographical navigation and logistics. In 1974, Romania implemented a four-digit postal code system. However, a significant change occurred on May 1, 2003, when the postal codes were expanded to six digits. The new system now provides a more detailed representation of addresses at the street level, especially in major cities with populations exceeding 50,000.

The six digits in the postal code are structured as follows, reading from left to right: the postal area, the county, the city or commune, and the last three digits, which vary based on the size of the city or commune. These three digits may represent the commune or city, the street, or the specific house or building.

The first digit of the postal code designates the postal region, while the second digit identifies the county within that region. Together, these first two digits uniquely identify a county.

For larger cities, including the sectors of Bucharest, postal codes range from 0xxx to 4xxx. Each postal code pinpoints a specific street address or a small group of addresses within these urban areas.

Smaller cities are assigned postal codes from 5xxx to 6xxx. In this case, a single postal code, ending in '00,' is assigned to the entire city.

Villages, designated by postal codes in the 7xxx range, have a unique code allocated to each village. Notably, if a village serves as the administrative center of a commune, its postal code will end in either 0 or 5.
